I'm not big on self-promotion, but I want to note that my essay was written in 2002 and that things have moved along since then. I think that today, in 2007, many more people are aware of the effects that the Web, hyperlinks and a participative environment are having on traditional hierarchical structures. We are all (or at least most of us) increasingly "wired", and we are beginning to see clear patterns of form and structure associated with working in networks and networks of networks. My contention is that this will eventually manifest into an "archy" ... some basic rules about how people behave and operate in networked structures, or wirearchies. It delves into how companies are evolving -- whether they like it or not -- to a more social media-centric way of operating throughout their organizations. The premise of the book is that companies that fight that the hardest are the most likely to be doomed, while those that embrace it the most aggressively are the most likely to succeed. It goes well beyond social media as an outbound marketing tool. If anything, it focuses more on social media's impact on R&D and overall organization structure.
