Community Manager Salary Report

My regular readers know that I’ve been providing salaries for community managers since last fall. In May I asked Bill Johnston at Forum One to collaborate on a survey of salaries. The results have been released so we now have specific numbers.

Here are the highlights:

  • The majority of the 225 responding were women (55%) vs male (45%).
  • The average salary was $81 k with a median of $72.5 k
  • Women earned 91% of what men are earning.
  • The majority have a bachelor’s degree & work 41-50 hrs per week (but don’t get OT)

I find it interesting that it was the first time they had surveyed for gender. Many of us have discussed the idea that women make better community managers (but that’s another blog post).

The majority are older than 31.

The majority report to marketing. I find the next 3 categories interesting: on their own comm team, no formal structure & throughout  the company.

There is more information in Bill’s post. The full Online Community Compensation 2008 report is available at Online Community Research Network & has more information, including:
• Community team size
• Respondent education
• Hours Worked
• Benefits
• Salary by Country (US, UK, Canada)
• Salary by Title
• Salary by Experience
• Salary increases in last 12 months
• Full write in comments from Survey

What are your thoughts? Is this in line with what you expected? Is the industry in it’s infancy & moving in the right direction?

  • Wiki for Community Managers

There seems to be a need for a comprehensive list of resources for community managers. I created a list on my Resources tab here on my blog but people aren’t finding it (and it’s getting out of date).

So I have created a wiki & invite all of you to contribute your favorite resources. Let’s build it together! I think that it will be easier to find things in that format than here on my blog.

Log in with your email address & the key (password) is ‘build’

Please let me know if you think that there is a more logical structure. It’s your Wiki so join in.

    An Empty Nest again

Yesterday we took our daughter to college again. The house will be quieter without a group of kids moving around at all hours. She’s an only child but always had friends over.

This is her second year, so the move was quite different. She moved in the day before the freshman arrive. So we missed the DJ, loud music, free pizza & pop & related hubbub. We also walked one less flight of stairs which was much appreciated! She was on fourth floor last year & I realized quickly how out of shape I am. (Thank gawd they don’t make tall buildings in northern Minnesota! :) )

It’s interesting to watch kids move in an amazing amount of furniture into a small shared space. Fridge, microwave, TV, recliners, etc are all wrestled up the stairs. Our daughter bought lightweight frame chairs which saved on us.

We made the trip to Walmart to grab the necessities that she needed: tv cable, extension cord & food to get by before food service opens. She came home this morning to get her Wii. She’s only an hour away which is really convenient!

She has chosen nursing as a major so she’ll have a busy year!

    Types of Online Communities

I need your help in compiling a list of types of online communities. The categories are broad. The criteria is that they would have a community manager or be interested in community manager topics.

*Update – Scott pointed out that there should be some organizational framework or taxonomy. My goal isn’t to create an exhaustive list of types of communities. To clarify  my goal is to create a list of general types of communities that have needs that are unique to them. What are their idiosyncracies? So this list needs to have that information included here. More to come on this.

    Types of Online Communities

    • open source
    • enterprise
    • small to medium business
    • start-ups
    • gaming
    • non-profits – education, library, museums, charities
    • media, publications
    • private communities
    • open innovation
    • internal collaboration
    • communities for establishing standards?

Your turn! What would you add? Are there any that you would take off?
