Two great topics here - Social media and telecommuting. As you know telecommuting was meant to be far more accepted at this point in time (remember when HP encouraged it approx. 20 years ago?). I have found it completely depends on the mindset of company leadership. I worked from home more in the early 90s (when I worked with more mature folks, at more established companies) than I have in recent years (less maturity / great distrust)! The worst part is when a company doesn't have a formal policy - and some individuals have great work from home flexibility while others don't (usually the political landscape dictates this). Anyone who has worked for an international B2B tech company can tell you that it's often just as easy (or easier) to collaborate with your colleagues in Asia than it is with people in the same building.

As far as social media - I believe that more B2B case studies will help give some credibility and structure around best practices. I do hope that more and more marketing departments will take ownership of the process - as it usually does fall under the "lead gen" or "networking" aspects of revenue generation or customer service. I think it's too much to ask of sales to be monitoring these venues and responding with "on brand" messaging. Sales should be able to focus on closing - not lead gen.
